The mouth contains the highest concentration of bacteria anywhere in our body. Although many of these bacteria are genial which help us in the various functionalities of the mouth, there are some that can lead to various infections and diseases of the mouth. As all of us know (with personal experience), any pain in the teeth or gums feels excruciating, it is a better idea to know about and take precautions against diseases that affect the gums and the teeth.

Erosion
No, not the erosion of fertile soil. This type of erosion takes place in an individual’s mouth, specifically on his teeth. This condition is also known as acid erosion because acidic foods and drinks are the main culprit in this case. Food items with a pH below 5.0-5.7 usually trigger the condition. This is one of the most common ailments of the teeth and affects a large number of people, especially children.
Gum diseases
Although the gums have their own set of diseases, we will talk about the two most common ones; receding gums (gingival recession) and swollen gums (gingival enlargement.
Receding gums are commonly found in people in their 40’s but it is not unheard of in teenagers. It might happy due to any of the following reasons – overaggressive brushing, inadequate brushing, using tobacco and sometimes just because the tooth doesn’t get out of the gums.
The other disease, i.e. swollen gums is particularly common in women and can be caused due to a variety of reasons. These reasons include – inflammation of the gums, side effect of some drugs, pregnancy, puberty and the deficiency of vitamin C.
